Abstract

BACKGROUND:Bronchial asthma has a prevalence of 6.2% in the Ph ilippines as of 2009.  Persistent asthma is defined as having at least two days in a week of sy mptoms; with moderate persistent asthma having symptoms  daily and severe persistent asthma having several episodes per day.  Management of these cases require the use of a comb ination of a long acting beta agonist and inhaled corticosteroids.        OBJECTIVES     This study aims to compare the effectivity of  Salm eterol/Fluticasone and Formoterol/Budesonide in terms of controlling persi stent asthma as measured by peak expiratory flow

METHODS:  A search on various electronic databases (PUBMED, M EDLINE) was done using the key words "asthma", "Formoterol Budesonide", "turbuhaler", "F luticasone Salmeterol",  "diskus",  "asthma control" and "persistent asthma". Candidate article s were then retrieved and assessed for the pre-specified selection criteria.

RESULTS:  A total of two studies were included in the meta-an alysis.  The rate for overall effect was not significant (p=0.11).  There is no significant diff erence in terms of peak expiratory flow in patients using Salmeterol/fluticasone and formotero l/budesonide.

CONCLUSION: The use of Salmeterol/fluticasone and formoterol/budesonide is able to demonstrate improvement in the peak expiratory flow of patients with persistent asthma, however with no significant difference between the two aforementioned medications.
